Yes, it currently makes duplicate copies. And that is by design so that users don't end up unintentionally deleting their original referenced photos/videos from Photo Library. While this feels like an efficient way of storing data, the support from Apple in Photos is not mature yet for this functionality. We hope support for this from Apple improves in the future as this will significantly make our current sync process faster. Here is a post from Apple Discussion Forum about this topic.

There was another app called Momento which referenced photos instead of duplicating them and it caused lot of problems due to which they had to roll back this feature. You can read more about it here:

Thanks for explaining and providing the references.

What resolution does photos and videos get stored in Dyrii database? In iPhone/iPad camera settings, I have left them to their default (1080p @30fps for videos). Because I notice the video gets compressed while adding to Dyrii.

Yes, we downscale both images and videos for optimizing storage space. But we balance it to not lose noticeable quality. Are you noticing any issues?

No. Just was curious about size that time.

After three trips and maybe 50 to 100 pictures I find that Dyrii has gobbled up nearly 12GB of storage!! I have no idea how? At this rate I cannot use it as I intended. How can such little data occupy so much storage?

Gary - It could be due to backups. Have you turned on automated backups under Settings?
